The idea that America was 'discovered' is typically a western-centric way of thinking, especially considering that people were living here long before any of the European explorers came out to the west. Also, there are archaeological ruins found in upstate New York that belong to Vikings...a set of European explorers that set foot in this country long before the conquistadors did.
A lot of Italian Americans look at Columbus Day as a way to celebrate their heritage in a country that for a long time discriminated against them in the early 20th; but there are far, far better heroes to look up to and venerate than Columbus; Italian history is rife with inventors, explorers, artists and scholars who are far more worthy.
Oh, and did you know there is the possibility that Columbus wasn't even Italian? Why do we celebrate this man?
